Azienda Agricola Rigo Vini (Piedmont)
As Silvano Rigo explains, passion and experience provide the groundwork for his wines. Silvano's vineyards are in Diano d'Alba in the Langhe hills where Dolcetto finds some of its best expression. Silvano's 10 hectare estate is located mostly in the esteemed Sori Piadvenza 400 meters above sea level. Here the limestone soil and southern exposure produce grapes of the highest quality.
When visiting Silvano, you're most likely to find him with with his father, Secondo. Father and son work together producing Piedmont's "other" wines of distinction -- Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Arneis and Chardonnay. They combine the best of traditional techniques with modern know how, using a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels to make wines that are complex, delicious and easy to drink. Piedmont locals and Italian wine drinkers the world over know there's so much more to the region than just Barolo and Barbaresco. They know in areas like Diano d'Alba where Dolcetto takes center stage, you often find the best examples of these wines. The next time you're in the Piedmont, take a short drive to Diano d'Alba to see Silvano, and you'll be rewarded with some seriously delicious wines from Piedmont's other famous grapes.
