Verdicchio may be one of Italy’s finest and most complex, age-worthy white varieties, but not all Verdicchio is the same. Verdicchio from the tiny DOC Matelica, high in the inland hills of the Marche and farther from the influence of the Adriatic takes on a completely different expression from its sister wine in the Castelli di Jesi DOC. Verdicchio di Matelica has a continental microclimate and tends to show more acid and mineral and is fast becoming one of the premier white wine regions in all of Italy.
In these mountain vineyards, which trace its Verdicchio heritage back to its medieval past, we are happy to introduce Colpaola. Colpaola is a 10 hectare family estate owned by Stefania and Francesco Porcarelli. Francesco remembers well the land being worked by his grandfather and father before him. He considers these moments the best of his youth. Now it’s his turn to work the land and leave a legacy for his children. At 2,100 feet above sea level, the Colpaola vineyard is the highest elevation vineyard in Matelica. Almost all of the vineyard is planted to Verdicchio. This cooler-climate expression of Verdicchio produces a wine of great minerality, nerve and backbone. Certified organic since 2013, Colpaola in an exciting addition to our family of stellar, boutique Marche producers. To taste Colpaola wines, please contact us. |
