Podere Sapaio (Tuscany)
Massimo Piccin is a man on a mission. Since his first vintage in 2004, he has been producing some of the world's greatest Super-Tuscan wines. Massimo plants Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on his 40 hectare estate in Bolgheri. His sandy and calcareous soils along the Tuscan coast give a truly unique Italian expression to his Bordeaux-inspired wines.
Massimo makes only two wines - Volpolo and Sapaio. Volpolo is his younger Bolgheri Rosso that spends 14 months in French oak and 6 months in bottle before release. Sapaio is Massimo's Bolgheri Superiore. It spends 18 months in French oak and up to 10 months in bottle before release. These are wines of limited production that are delicious upon release, but which can age for many years. These are wines of power, elegance and complexity. As Massimo notes, "Men and their knowledge belong to the terroir just like sun and the rain, the soil and the vine." It's a good reminder that great wine is a work of art as much as a work of nature. To this point, we'll give Massimo the last word: "Great wines can't do without man's great passion." To taste Massimo's wines, please, contact us. Click here for recent awards and accolades. |
